We’ve known each other for a long time — Juha and I were colleagues years before Compile. And for years, we watched how software consulting was typically done. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
Employees were treated like numbers, and their strengths were rarely recognized. Decisions were always driven by money, not people.
Salespeople made promises to clients that developers couldn’t possibly deliver on.
All of this eroded morale. And when morale goes down, so does quality. The systems delivered to clients ended up as patchwork solutions — fragile, hard to maintain, and nearly impossible to develop further.
It was frustrating. We both knew there had to be a better way to do consulting.
We talked about how, instead of chasing quick wins, client projects could be built on long-term trust — if only we could clear the obstacles standing in the way of passionate developers doing their best work.
That’s where the idea of sustainable software development began to take root.
And it became the foundation for Compile.
In 2015, our very first consultant joined the company.
Now, a few years later, we’re over 100 strong.
It feels like the idea is working.
